Things I’m looking forward to AFTER the Sydney Marathon

It’s only a few days to go until the Sydney Marathon. It’s been hectic and I have let it take over my life too much. My brain has been mush and everything has been scheduled around each run.

I also know I could have said no at any time, but like I couldn’t find an initial reason to say no to participating, there was no truely strong reason for cancelling. And the long runs got easier to handle and, with enough food for fuel, they are less of a struggle.

That said, I’m looking forward to next week. I may be exhausted and struggling to walk, but it will be done.

What I’m looking forward to

3 runs each week

And maybe even less. I’ll still run because it’s fun and I love the social aspect of the Wednesday night group runs, but that’s just one run. I want to keep the long runs on the weekend but have them under 2 hours. It’s much more fun than pounding away for half the day.

Running fast

Because of last year’s injury, since December I’ve squeezed injury comeback, half marathon distance training and then marathon distance in with only a 2 week break. That’s a LOT of slow. There have been “some” speed workouts but not enough to make me faster or to do what I enjoy most. Bring on the sprint intervals and hill repeats. Yes, I did mean hill repeats.

Get back to work

This isn’t just for my bank balance. My sabbatical has been making me better but now how can I make other things better? I’m itching to get back into solving some crazy customer problems with a campaign or clear communications. Last week I released my refreshed website with freelance and fractional openings. I’m also thinking of offering some pro bono work, but hesitant to widely ask for referrals because it needs to mean something to me and I don’t want to insult anyone whose passion project is different than mine.

Give blood

I tried giving blood a few weeks ago but ended up sick. Then it got too close to the marathon to give blood safely. It’ll have to be next week now.

Take more photos

Jen, we are overdue for a photowalk. I’m using my camera so infrequently now that I need to charge the battery EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Race for fun

Tash at Runners Paradise asked me if I’ll join her for the Roller Coaster trail run in October because she’s never had a race that’s just for fun. Umm, YES. That’s my next race. It’s a trail so steep hills and technical trails versus a nice smooth road. A few others in the 7 Minute Pace Club are joining. It’s only 12km but we’ll take snacks, stop for photos at the lookout and ignore our watches.

After that I have the 2XU Wellness Run in November. I’m running the 10k with the 7 Minute Pace Club team. It’s within all our abilities to race but it was hot last year (I was meant to run the half marathon but the injury made me postpone), so our goal is fun and we’ll see what happens.

And the best part of these races? They’re both within my fitness level so no specific training needed.

Set a new fitness challenge

My original plan after the Ballarat (half) Marathon was to learn to swim. I pushed that to after Sydney but also want to learn to lift heavy. Currently, I’m not that eager for either one. Maybe I just need a break and see what happens.

Just a few more sleeps to go.

Images are both my own work. I suppose I should add I’m looking forwarding to seeing Wicked: For Good but I am seeing that regardless of my training schedule.
