No, not the Ballarat Marathon. I’m still running the half for that in 2 weeks. Yesterday I was accepted into Transurban’s team for the Sydney Marathon in August.
It’s kind of a big deal race. A very big deal. Like one of the top 7 marathons in the world big deal.
So, naturally I’m freaking out. In reality, it’s a huge race with lots of people. Some very fast people, like Eliud Kipchoge. And slower people like me.
It actually doesn’t make sense that I’m freaking out. If all went to plan I’d be running a flatter marathon in Ballarat in 2 weeks. I had mentally moved on from running a marathon. This is just an opportunity that’s too good to turn down.
I also kind of expect this. I’m a marketer. When the chance to enter the staff ballot came up I threw my name in knowing it’s a ballot and there’s a chance I don’t get selected. When the entry deadline came closer, I checked page views on the intranet article, applied a typical conversion of 2%, and saw the odds were very in my favour.
This means I race the half marathon in 2 weeks and immediately have to merge recovery into a new training block. Not ideal, but possible.
I’ve also been planning. I confirmed my registration, selected my finishers t-shirt size, have swooned over, but not yet ordered the race jacket, swore a few times, and ordered 2 pairs of my current favourite shoes.
Next is to confirm flights and the hotel, then taper for Ballarat.
