Giving myself a Yes Day

A shadow of Bianca on her bike

Today I gave myself a Yes Day. An entire day where I let myself do what I wanted. Within reason, but there were few restrictions.

I wasn’t allowed to do anything my podiatrist would be upset with me for. So no running. No excessive walking. No jumping or bouncing. And I had to use my crutches as much as possible.

Why do a Yes Day?

Yesterday sucked. My leg was achy all day with some mild bone pain. The aches are more muscle but for some reason that pain upsets me more. I spent the day on the couch and skipped my short, permitted walk. I don’t think I even watered the balcony plants.

I had done everything right. I’ve been walking less than the podiatrist instructed. He said if there was no improvement in these 3 weeks, I’d need crutches, so I just started on them earlier. I’ve upped my calcium intake (that’s more to help prevent reoccurrence, but still). Model patient, but still not getting properly better. I haven’t made it to 3 days pain-free.

So, I said ‘stuff it’. If over-restricting doesn’t help, why do it? The outcome will probably be the same.

Starting with brunch

I started with brunch. My husband dropped me at a local cafe for chilli scramble and book reading. It was heavenly. Then I hopped the 300m home on crutches.

Then a bike ride

I’ve always had clearance to ride with no or low resistance. I’ve just been too scared to do it and haven’t tested my new bike on hills.

So, I swapped my crutches for my bike and headed off.

First through a park.

Then along the bike track to Box Hill. It’s the furthest I’ve been from home in a month.

My bike handled most hills perfectly. Except this little one. I think I need a new tactic and come from a different angle with a run up. Walking that little bit was not podiatrist-approved.

Then I sat in the grass. This was my favourite bit. My balcony plants aren’t green or grassy enough.

I was going to head down to Nunawading but realised 6 weeks of no running and minimal walking means my fitness isn’t there. So I rode a block to make it up to 10k and went home.

I love my Yes Day. The bone in my leg is sore but the same as it was before. The muscle isn’t aching. I count this as a win. I know I feel better for it.
